What is UVA, UVB, and SPF?

Spring is finally here, the weather has been lovely recently, but don't forget to put on your sunscreen before you head out to the sun. For those of you who are lazy to put on sunscreen or are skeptical about it, I am going to tell you why sunscreen is so important, and how to choose a good sunscreen for your skin.

The ultraviolet of the sun can be harmful to our skin in many ways. The UVA causes wrinkle and aging, whereas UVB causes sunburn, and the UV damage can also cause skin cancer. If you don't want to burn your skin, or you want to be young and healthy, then you better put on some sunscreen before you go out, rain or shine. There are UV rays even in cloudy or rainy days. The clouds may block the light and heat, but it can not protect you from ultraviolet.

For an overall protection, find a sunscreen that is labeled "broad-spectrum", which means that it protects the skin from both UVA and UVB. Another label you see often on sunscreens are SPF, as in Sun Protection Factor, it measure the ability to protect your skin from UVB. For example, if it takes 20 minutes for your skin to burn in the sun, an SPF 15 prevents it for 15 times longer. But, even if you are using higher SPF, it is highly suggested that you reapply sunscreen every couple of hours.

I really recommend the Aloe Sunscreen from Forever, it has broad spectrum with SPF 30, and it is water resistant for 80 minutes. The creamy texture makes it perfect as a daily moisturizing lotion. And, I love how the product is based on Aloe Vera, since our skin sometimes burn and dry out under the sun, Aloe Vera can help soothe and re-hydrate the skin.

While the Aloe Sunscreen can be too oily for my face, I use a more mattifying sunscreen or a foundation with SPF instead. The UV Extreme Protective Cream SPF 50 from Dr. Wu is my current favorite for my face. It's a bit mattifying, which also works well as a makeup base. Another product I like to use on my face is the Aloe BB Cream from Sonya, with SPF 20. It hydrates the skin, even out skintone, and conceal imperfection at the same time, which is very convenient.

What is your favorite sunscreen?

  1. I like the Avène one, it is SPF 50+ (never wear less, as I burn easily).

  6. It is a little pricey, but I like to invest in my skincare if the ingredients are worth it.
